I had the incredible opportunity to be one of the makeup artists at Kelowna Fashion Weekend this past weekend, and it was an experience I’ll cherish forever. The excitement, creativity, and sheer beauty that filled the air were truly inspiring. The models, designers, and fellow makeup artists all contributed to an atmosphere of artistic expression and innovation. Today, I want to share some tips on how you can incorporate the glamour and sophistication of runway makeup into your everyday routine.
1. Flawless Base
Tip: Prep and Prime
A flawless base is crucial for any makeup look, especially for runway styles that need to withstand bright lights or sun and long hours. Start by thoroughly cleansing your skin and applying a hydrating moisturizer. Follow up with a primer that suits your skin type – this will help to smooth out your skin’s texture and ensure your makeup stays put all day.
Tip: Full Coverage Foundation
Choose a full-coverage foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly. Use a damp beauty sponge or a foundation brush to blend it seamlessly into your skin. Don’t forget to set your foundation with a translucent powder to avoid any unwanted shine.
2. Bold Eyes
Tip: Dramatic Eyeshadow
Runway makeup often features bold and dramatic eyeshadow looks. Don’t be afraid to experiment with vibrant colors and smoky effects. Start with a neutral base color all over the lid, then add a darker shade to the crease and outer corners for depth. Finish with a pop of color on the center of the lid or inner corner.
Tip: Precision Eyeliner
A precise eyeliner can make a huge difference. Whether you prefer a classic winged look or something more avant-garde, practice makes perfect. Use a liquid or gel eyeliner for a sharp, clean line. If you’re new to eyeliner, try using a pencil liner first and then go over it with liquid for better control.
3. Subtle Lips
Tip: Neutral Lip Colors
While bold lips are a runway staple, a more subtle approach can also be incredibly chic. Opt for neutral shades like nudes, soft pinks, or light mauves that complement your natural lip color. These shades are versatile and can suit any occasion, providing a polished and understated look.
Tip: Glossy Finishes
For a more modern twist, add a layer of clear gloss over your neutral lipstick. This not only adds dimension but also makes your lips look fuller and more luscious. Just be mindful of reapplying the gloss throughout the day to maintain the shine.
4. Highlight and Contour
Tip: Sculpt Your Face
Contouring and highlighting are key techniques in runway makeup to accentuate the model's facial features. Use a contour powder or cream that is a few shades darker than your skin tone to define your cheekbones, jawline, and forehead. Highlight the high points of your face – the tops of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and your cupid’s bow – with a shimmering highlighter to create a luminous glow.
5. Finishing Touches
Tip: Setting Spray
To ensure your runway-inspired look lasts all day, finish with a setting spray. This will lock in your makeup and keep it looking fresh and vibrant. A setting spray can also help to meld the layers of makeup together, giving you a more natural finish.
Bringing a touch of runway glamour into your everyday makeup routine can be a fun and empowering way to express yourself. Whether you're heading to a special event or just want to feel fabulous on a regular day, these tips can help you achieve a stunning look that’s straight off the catwalk. Happy experimenting!
